Tempe officials say a crescent moon on top of A Mountain, symbolizing one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims, was found destroyed.
Officials say students designed and built a 15-foot-tall crescent moon, which is a symbol of Ramadan, a month when Muslims honor the Quran and fast during sunlight hours.
Now Tempe police are investigating its destruction and at the same time increasing patrols around places of worship.
City officials say symbols of other faiths have stood on A Mountain and there is no place for hate in Tempe.
Word of the incident comes after a man was recently accused of firing BBs and paintballs at a Phoenix mosque while people were celebrating Ramadan.
