The I-40 and U.S. 93 interchange tunnel construction.

A new highway interchange to connect I-40 and U.S. 93 in Kingman, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The $106 million free-flowing interchange is 70% complete, ADOT said. When complete, the interchange will help to reduce traffic delays on the main route between Phoenix and Las Vegas.

“As traffic on U.S. 93 reaches I-40, they've got to stop at a traffic signal,” said Garin Groff, a spokesperson for ADOT. “You know, at the end of a weekend, that can lead to a really significant backup, very long delays.”

The interchange brings two new flyover bridges, improvements to existing bridges, and tunnels to carry surface street traffic below the highway ramps.

“We're going to eliminate the need for people to stop at a traffic light on Beale Street as they approach I-40,” said Garin Groff. “Instead, drivers can use ramps between the two highways and greatly reduce delays as they're passing through Kingman.”

The improvement project involved crews blasting a pathway through Clacks Canyon for a mile of new roadway to connect I-40 and U.S. 93.

ADOT said ongoing construction will involve brief closures of U.S. 93 for rock blasting. The closures, when needed, will only be scheduled after 8 p.m. on weeknights.

The interchange is scheduled to open in early 2027.
