Ahead of the Final Four women’s basketball tournament in Phoenix, the NCAA helped fund the renovation of a community center in the Alhambra area as part of a legacy project.
Upgrades to the Washington Activity Center include refurbished basketball courts, new literacy and e-sport lounges, and a computer lab.
Collaborators on the project included the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority and the Phoenix Final Four Local Organizing Committee.
“In every women's Final Four city, the NCAA makes this local investment because we firmly believe that sports is a way that we can leave a lasting legacy, but sports is also a platform, a means by which we bring community together," said Lynn Holzman, the NCAA’s vice president for women’s basketball.
At the project’s unveiling, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs said facilities like the Washington Activity Center are integral to building strong and thriving communities.
About 18,000 community members currently use the center each year.
