The Phoenix police chief has fired a sergeant over his behavior at an anti-ICE student protest in Chandler in January.
Phoenix police Chief Matt Giordano has fired Dusten Mullen following an internal investigation.
In a statement, Giordano said Mullen’s actions raised significant concerns about his judgment and professionalism. Though Mullen was off-duty and not in uniform as he counterprotested students opposed to ICE, Giordano said the oath police take binds Mullen to a higher standard.
Mullen has sued to keep his job, but a federal judge let the discipline process continue.
Mullen can still appeal for reinstatement with the city’s civil service board.
