Court records say a Buckeye police officer who was indicted this week on aggravated assault charges punched a pregnant woman while she was handcuffed.
A probable cause statement says in late 2025, Officer Carri Carrico arrested a woman, who was 37 weeks pregnant, for reckless driving.
At the station, as Carrico restrained the already handcuffed woman to a bench, she allegedly punched her head.
“No officer should ever lay their hands on a restrained person who is handcuffed and not showing any threat. So this is definitely excessive force,” said civil rights attorney Benjamin Taylor, who is not involved with the case.
Another probable cause statement alleges that Carrico punched a second handcuffed prisoner in front of detention staff in early 2026.
Online court records do not yet list an attorney representing Carrico.
“You have to commend the county attorney for moving forward with an officer. Because it's very rare that you see officers being indicted and prosecuted,” Taylor said.
Carrico is on unpaid leave from the department and under internal investigation.
