June 19, 2026: Fire is 10% contained, firefighters making progress
A wildfire in the Kaibab National Forest is 10% contained as of Friday morning, and firefighters are making progress.
The Rock Canyon Fire has burned more than 4,500 acres near the Utah border, according to Inciweb.
Dolores Garcia, who is the Arizona Resource Advisory Council coordinator for the Bureau of Land Management, said the blaze was caused by lightning.
“There’s no threat to communities at this time. The predominant movement has been from west to east, pretty much in line with the winter road, which a lot of locals up there are familiar with,” Garcia said.
Hikers and campers are being kept out of the area, and multiple roads into the forest are closed.
“We’re getting a good handle on several portions of the fire, with most of the activity being on the northeast side of the fire,” Garcia said.
Garcia urged people to help prevent fires by being responsible.
“We don’t need human-caused fires competing,” she said.
