The Arizona Department of Transportation is beginning a widening project on State Route 79 north of Florence.
A stretch of State Route 79 between Florence and the U.S. 60 is a busy corridor with only one travel lane in each direction.
ADOT will begin work to add passing lanes to an 8-mile stretch of highway between Mileposts 140 and 148, roughly from the U.S. 60 to Arizona Farms Road.
Garin Groff is a spokesperson for ADOT.
“This is a project that will enhance safety by providing passing lanes for safer passing than the current configuration,” Groff said. “It should also improve the flow of traffic on this section of the highway.”
The widening project will add an intermittent passing lane, which will alternate between northbound and southbound traffic. There will be two northbound segments and two southbound segments.
“In addition to passing lanes, will include adding paved shoulders on this whole eight mile section, where we do have the passing lanes,” Groff said.
Construction begins on July 6 and is expected to be completed next summer.
