The Phoenix Police Department says a 34-year-old man died in custody on Sunday.

Phoenix police announced the death of Devin Alford on Tuesday.

A department spokesperson says officers were called to the area near 44th Street and Thomas Road on a report of an injured person. The report said that a man now identified as Alford was behaving erratically, rolling on the ground and hurting himself.

Officers said they put Alford in handcuffs and shortly after he became unresponsive. Officers took off the handcuffs and Alford was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

State police and the medical examiner are investigating.
