Cities across Maricopa County are offering residents free sand for sandbags to help control floodwater during ongoing monsoon storms.
The city of Phoenix says residents can collect sand at certain city parks, like El Oso and Moon Valley parks. Other municipalities offering the granular material include Tempe, Scottsdale and Chandler. Residents in need of sandbags shouldn’t show up empty handed to some of these sites.
Todd Keller is a captain with the Phoenix Fire Department.
“It's gonna become a first-come, first-served basis. You do need to bring your own shovel and your own bags. But I will tell you, if there is no sand there, that is going to be replenished," he said.
