Arizona-born residents may now be able to access a digital version of their birth certificates on their smartphones when at the MVD.
In a collaboration between the Arizona Department of Health Services and Department of Transportation, residents can now use a “digital birth credential" when applying for MVD services.
This is the first launch of the online certificate in the country and was first piloted in 2025 at three MVD locations. It is now available to residents statewide through a mobile app.
The new identification is also in partnership with Lexis Nexis, an analytics and database company focused on public records and background checks.
"The birth certificate is the cornerstone of identity, and Arizona has transformed it into a verifiable credential for our digital-first world," said Richard Grape, senior director of strategy. "By modernizing this foundational identity document, Arizona has set a new standard for trust across life events and the future of accessible, citizen-centric digital services."
According to the company, the new digital birth certificate can help residents who can’t access their original document get state identification.
