The Arizona State Courts Building in downtown Phoenix houses the Arizona Supreme Court and the Arizona Court of Appeals.

A cyberattack on the Arizona court system likely exposed the personal data of an untold number of Arizonans.

Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer announced on Friday that the courts were targeted by criminal hackers, who are believed to have gained possession of personal identifying information of “many Arizonans.”

In a statement, the chief justice said IT staff quickly stopped the attack, and administrators are reaching out to individuals whose information may have been compromised.

“As soon as I learned about this outrageous criminal attack on Arizona’s Courts, I immediately called our team together to formulate a response,” Timmer said. “I personally spoke with the top-ranking FBI leader in the state, and I pledged our full commitment to supporting their investigation and minimizing the likelihood that the information will be used to further jeopardize Arizonans,”

The FBI is investigating the incident.
