A fatal shooting Monday morning closed westbound I-10 during the morning rush hour. Department of Public Safety officers responding to a single-vehicle collision and found the driver with a gunshot wound.
State troopers arrived just after 3:30 a.m. to the accident near 7th Avenue. They found a vehicle that had crashed into a barrier with a gunshot victim inside. DPS handed the investigation over to Phoenix police.
"I think at this point investigators probably believe that he was shot while he was in his car and traveling. You know obviously we’re going to narrow that down air-tight if you will," said Phoenix police Sgt. Robert Scherer.
The case has only been ruled as a death investigation, but more details surrounding the final cause of death will be released later this week from the medical examiner.
Investigators wrapped up their work and the freeway was reopened to traffic early Monday afternoon.
