Q&AZ: What's happening with Waymo's self-driving vehicles in Arizona?

Waymo announced in April 2022 that it will expand its autonomous ride-hailing operation into downtown Phoenix.

Waymo is recalling more than 600 self-driving vehicles after one of them struck a telephone pole in Arizona.

The recall includes 672 vehicles, which is the entire fleet.

This is the second recall over software concerns this year.

In a recall report of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Waymo says it is updating all 672 of its self-driving vehicles.

The recall cites an “insufficient ability to avoid pole or pole-like permanent objects “ in certain circumstances.

Last month, a Waymo vehicle hit a wooden utility pole trying to perform a low-speed pullover maneuver in a Phoenix alleyway. No passengers were on board.

This also followed a federal investigation launched in May to look into accidents involving driverless Waymo vehicles.

Back in February, Waymo issued a voluntary recall for a different software issue that the company said corrected “a rare scenario” resulting in two incidents, including one in Phoenix that had no injuries but minor vehicle damage.
