Last week, an unidentified explosive device damaged the front of a Mesa home, according to police.

On Wednesday, Mesa police announced they had arrested two people in the case.

Phoenix residents Daniel J. Traynor, age 18; and Eliyzar R. Frias, age 19; were arrested on suspicion of three felony charges, according to a police statement.

Detective Richard Encinas said Mesa police officers responded to a call last week from a man who said he’d gotten a notification on his Ring doorbell camera.

“As he was walking to the front door, he heard a very loud explosion,” said Encinas. “The glass in his front door shattered and some of that glass hit him in the face.”

The victim declined a hospital visit for his minor injuries, according to Encinas.

Police said Wednesday that the device was a large firework.

While a pride flag was displayed outside the home and speculation has circulated on social media, Encinas said the victim does not believe it was a bias-related crime.

“If things are going on in Phoenix and in other East Valley cities or whatever, you know we will put that information out to them and see if we get anything back from those other agencies,” said Encinas.

“But as of right now, it's only been a few days. At this moment we have not connected this case to any other similar cases, at least here in Mesa," he said.
