State Rep. Laura Terech (D-Scottsdale) announced this week that she will resign from the House of Representatives at the end of the month.

Terech is the seventh House Democrat to resign this year.

She said in a statement that she’s stepping down early to “accept a new role” in which she will continue to “serve” the state.

Terech had previously announced in March that she wouldn’t be running for reelection this year.

Terech said in her statement that she brought a “collaborative spirit” to the Legislature where she focused on childhood public education and election security.

She boasted of getting four bills to be heard in committee hearings — three in 2023 and one this year. Most Democratic bills don’t receive hearings in the GOP-controlled Legislature.

Representatives Athena Salman, Jennifer Longdon, Jevin Hodge, Amish Shah, Leezah Sun and Marcelino Quinonez were the other House Democrats who stepped down this year.

Of all the Democrats who’ve resigned, Terech leaves behind an empty seat in of the Legislature’s most competitive district. One of her seatmates is a Democrat, the other is a Republican.

When Terech resigns, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will be tasked with appointing her replacement from a slate of three nominees selected by Democrats in her district.
