Nearly $16 million in federal funds have been set aside for the Rio East-Dobson Streetcar Extension project. Congressman Greg Stanton made the announcement this week.

The project is expected to extend existing track by another 4 miles, from Tempe into Mesa along Rio Salado Parkway.

"We are really excited to get this work and continuing this work moving forward and ensuring that we have this type of transportation options for our residents here in Mesa," said Mesa Vice Mayor Francisco Heredia.

The funds come out of the Bipartisan Infrastructure law. Heredia says there is no timeline yet for when crews will break ground.
