Federal money is coming to Douglas to fix and improve roadways

The city of Douglas — along the southern border — is getting federal funding to improve its roadways under an ongoing infrastructure project there.

The Department of Transportation is putting $23 million toward the project — part of the agency’s $1.8 billion, nationwide grant program, RAISE.

That’ll fund what’s called a Complete Street study — to make roadways safer for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians, and reduce fatalities. It will also fund improvements like pavement resurfacing and storm drainage to a handful of key roadways in the city.

Douglas has a bustling port of entry that sees cross-border tourist and trade traffic everyday. Congressman Raúl Grijalva of southern Arizona says the grant will also include changes like bilingual signage and rerouting efforts to relieve border traffic pressure from downtown.
