The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for eight Arizona counties this weekend.
Daytime highs are expected to be up to 117 degrees in the Phoenix area.
The warning runs through the holiday weekend for Maricopa, Pinal, Coconino, Yavapai, Mohave, La Paz and Yuma counties. It covers Pima County for Friday and Saturday.
Although everyone is at risk for heat-related illnesses, the Arizona Department of Health Services says young children are especially vulnerable. Residents are advised to move activities indoors to air-conditioned spaces and have children wear loose and light-colored clothing.
Other important precautions include seeking shade, staying hydrated, and staying informed about local weather conditions. Frequent hydration breaks and monitoring for signs of heat-related illnesses can help prevent serious health issues during this extreme heat period.
Extreme heat is the #1 weather-related killer each year. Always stay properly hydrated and remain indoors in the air conditioning as much as possible, especially during the hottest time of the day. #azwx #cawx pic.twitter.com/89Px1eX6yu
