Flagstaff council supports water agreement benefiting tribes, city

City of Flagstaff

The city of Flagstaff.

The Flagstaff city council passed a resolution Tuesday supporting the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Act.

The historic agreement ends years of litigation and creates a way for the Navajo Nation, the Hopi tribe the state of Arizona and other parties to work with the federal government on water infrastructure projects in this part of the state.

It also benefits the city. Flagstaff’s mayor noted the agreement supports the so-called Red Gap Ranch Regional Water Pipeline Project. That’s in the planning phase but will ultimately connect the ranch’s water supply, which the city owns, to Flagstaff’s water distribution system.
