Local businesses have a new resource to help protect their properties against crime, thanks to an online guide launched by Phoenix, in partnership with Arizona State University.

The guide focuses on crime prevention through environmental design with the goal of making businesses look and feel safer for customers and less inviting to criminals.

It explains six crime prevention principles: natural surveillance, activity support, maintenance, target hardening, territorial reinforcement and access control.

It also provides recommendations for specific businesses, like retail, banking, hotels, office and construction. For example, keeping trees and plants from blocking light sources and controlling access where people enter and exit.

Phoenix businesses wanting more information on the program or an evaluation of their properties can call 602-256-4303 or email Det. Brian Kornegay at [email protected].

As a senior field correspondent, Christina Estes focuses on stories that impact our economy, your wallet and public policy.
