While illegal border crossings are down, deaths have more than quadrupled month over month for migrants trekking through the southern Arizona desert.
Laurie Cantillo is with Humane Borders, a nonprofit that runs dozens of permitted water stations to help reduce migrant deaths.
She says the remains of 14 people were found in the desert in June — up from three in May.
“And that has us deeply concerned because as temperatures are climbing into the upper 100 teens now in southern Arizona, very concerned about rising numbers that we might be seeing as people attempt to cross," Cantillo said.
Cantillo also says there needs to be a more orderly process for people to seek asylum in the U.S.
