Coyotes owner reportedly gave up finding arena land. What does that mean for hockey in Arizona?

When the Arizona Coyotes were sold and moved to Salt Lake City earlier this year, the NHL said there was a chance the team would be able to come back. That was contingent on owner Alex Meruelo winning an auction for state trust land in north Phoenix and building an arena there.

But last month the state Land Department canceled the auction. And then, Meruelo reportedly told Coyotes staff that he was no longer pursuing land on which to build an arena.

Brandon Brown, senior reporter at the Phoenix Business Journal, breaks down what it means for the future of pro hockey in the Valley.
