Democrats in Legislative District 4 selected three nominees to replace Rep. Laura Terech, who resigned from the Arizona House of Representatives in June.
Terech announced earlier this year she would not seek re-election, then resigned after the end of the legislative session to join the Secretary of State’s Office.
The nominees selected are former lawmakers Kelli Butler and Dr. Eric Meyer, as well as Madison Elementary School Board President Karen Gresham.
The Maricopa County Supervisors will appoint Terech’s replacement from that list of nominees. That replacement will finish Terech’s term, which ends in early January. But, because the legislative session ended on June 14, that replacement will not have to partake in votes at the Arizona Legislature unless lawmakers are called back to participate in a special session — something Gov. Katie Hobbs said is a possibility.
Both Butler and Gresham are also running in this year’s election for the two House seats in LD4, which covers parts of Phoenix, Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. Republicans Matt Gress and Pamela Carter, who unsuccessfully ran for Scottsdale City Council in 2022, are also running in the LD 4 House race.
LD4 is one of only a handful of swing districts in Arizona that could determine which party controls the Legislature next year. Voters in the district elected one Democrat, Terech, and one Republican, Gress, to the House of Representatives in 2022.
