Kate Sheehy

Fronteras: The Changing America Desk Senior Field Correspondent - Tucson

Kate Sheehy is very happy to find herself back with Fronteras: The Changing America Desk as a Senior Field Correspondent in Tucson. Sheehy thinks being a reporter is the most amazing job because no other profession allows you to learn about a variety of subjects and provides the chance to meet people from different walks of life.

After attending California State University Chico and University of San Francisco she figured out what she wanted to with her B.A. in English Literature during her last year of college: public radio. Sheehy started as a volunteer with KCHO in Chico, Calif., licking envelopes and answering phones. Then she found herself on the street with a recorder, covering a protest for immigrant agricultural workers.

A few detours have given Sheehy quite a diverse work history: from a front desk clerk at a bustling downtown hotel to a communications specialist at a nonprofit for veterinarians in Texas. Graduate school brought her to Syracuse University’s Newhouse School in upstate New York. She then moved to Washington, D.C. and came full circle when she started covering the D.C. metro area’s Latino immigrant communities. Sheehy has reported for public radio stations in California, New York, D.C. and Nevada. Her introduction to the Fronteras Desk was in 2013 as a reporter in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sheehy has been a producer at the Washington, D.C. bureaus of CCTV China and Al Jazeera English. In 2011 she lived in El Salvador, working with journalists at the digital newspaper El Faro. She traveled Central America reporting for the Center for Public Integrity on a mysterious form of kidney disease killing agricultural workers across the region. Her story was nominated for both the National Institute for Health Management and the Association of Health Care Journalists awards.
