A new poll shows people living in the Colorado River Basin overwhelmingly want their governments to do more to secure water for the future. Arizona’s two largest utilities APS and SRP say they saw record-breaking demands for energy late last week. TIARA VIAN: This is KJZZ, your news and information station in Phoenix and across Arizona. I'm Tiara Vian. Here are this week's stories you don't want to miss.

At a time of major transformation and great uncertainty, to help answer questions about what is happening and why, we're launching a reporting project called "AI in Arizona". KJZZ's Taylor Griffith begins the series by examining what role data centers play in Arizona and why we have so many.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: Arizona already has 100 data centers and could double that amount within the next three to five years. That makes us the seventh-largest market for data centers in the nation. But what exactly is a data center?
RYAN GROVER: To me, at the end of the day, a data center is the core of our digital society. Everything that we do, you know, whether it is watching a movie on Netflix, whether it's sending an email, your healthcare, airlines, everything runs through a data center.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: That's Ryan Grover. He spent 20 years working in Banner Health's data centers and also heads the Phoenix chapter of AFCOM, a group of data center and IT professionals. Grover is not speaking on behalf of Banner for this story.
Basically, everything we do that requires an internet connection, which really is almost everything nowadays, creates a digital data point. That data lives on a computer chip, which is running on a server in a warehouse of thousands of other servers.
RYAN GROVER: So, like you have storage on your phones, we have massive—we call storage arrays.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: But not all data centers are the same. As Grover told me, there are three types. We'll start with the smallest: edge centers.
RYAN GROVER: So, for the audience, we're sitting currently in the SkySong building. So, there is most likely a small edge data center in here. That's most likely only like six pieces of equipment that keeps this place up and running, and it keeps it connected to the rest of the world.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: Then, there are enterprise data centers. These are often left unmarked because they're storing sensitive information for companies.
RYAN GROVER: Think about, you know, airlines, think about financial, healthcare, government.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: They can either be as small as two to three houses or as large as a full-size office building. According to Grover, you just need to know where to look.
RYAN GROVER: These are just, you look at a random building and you probably think it's a warehouse, but it's probably a data center, actually.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: Lastly, there's the ones that have caused the biggest stir: the hyperscale data centers.
RYAN GROVER: These are truly the big boxes, you know, like the Eastmark corridor, the Chandler Tech corridor, the Glendale and Goodyear corridors, where you see the giant boxes.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: Hyperscale data centers can have one tenant with massive data needs, like Microsoft or Google, or several.
So, how did Arizona end up with so many data centers? To understand that, we have to rewind about 30 years, says Russell Smoldon. Before he was a lobbyist for power companies and data centers, Smoldon worked for SRP. In the '90s and early 2000s, the utility was expanding along with the Valley's booming population.
RUSSELL SMOLDON: We were adding substations and 69-kV lines and 500-kV lines, and we were just getting prepared for all this growth. It was crazy boom time. And then, the Great Recession hits.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: The housing market crashed, companies fled, and SRP's customer base shrank basically overnight, he says. SRP had to find a way to sell this excess energy fast, or risk huge price hikes for everyone else.
RUSSELL SMOLDON: That's when we said, "Hmm, there's this new thing called data centers that store this stuff, and what would that be like? Let's, we've got a couple of them around town, let's talk to them and see how would we grow that?"
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: State lawmakers helped by passing a generous tax break on computer equipment in 2013. Smoldon says that incentive helped grow the data centers necessary for attracting major industries.
RUSSELL SMOLDON: At the time we did this, we just thought we were putting memory in boxes, you know, around town, right? Now with AI and all the things that go along with that, that's just kicked it into another level that none of us in the early days ever thought was a real thing. I mean, it's—it's science fiction.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: But many residents are concerned about this rapid expansion, says Andrea Clinton with the Arizona Data Center Alliance.
ANDREA CLINTON: Especially in Arizona, we were fighting to get the data centers to come here because it was a huge economic development initiative. But by the time they were all coming, it was kind of a little too late to keep up with the public perception.
TAYLOR GRIFFITH: She says projects are either being scaled back, delayed, or halted as communities voice concerns about the energy and water usage and the uncertain consequences of AI. Leaders in Tucson and Gilbert have begun to demand stronger rules of engagement for data centers in response to community concerns. Even major hubs like Chandler, Mesa, and Phoenix that once welcomed these companies with open arms have created more stipulations.
The state has weighed in, too. Governor Katie Hobbs recently signed a three-year pause on the incentives that have fueled Arizona's data center boom, citing concerns over power and water.

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has dominated the box office in its first two weekends, but those who haven't had the chance to see it in IMAX in Arizona could be waiting for weeks. Connor Greenwall and Jill Ryan have the details.
CONNOR GREENWALL: It's well past midnight at the Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe, and the place is a ghost town. The stores are shuttered and the Harkins movie theater lobby is empty. But within a few minutes, the IMAX lobby is flooded with people leaving the latest sold-out showing of "The Odyssey" in 70 mm.
JEROME KING: It was the only time we could find.
CONNOR GREENWALL: Jerome King and his newlyweds wife, Nadia, were among the hundreds of moviegoers attending a showing at 1:30 in the morning. Most people would be in bed at this time, but it was the only showing the Kings could get tickets at the Arizona Mills IMAX.
NADIA KING: You get the full picture, you get the full, like, scope of what's going on in the movie and the way they shot it.
CONNOR GREENWALL: Arizona Mills is one of only a few theaters in the United States with a 70 mm IMAX projector, and "The Odyssey" is the first film shot in its entirety using IMAX cameras.
SWEDE RONDAN: Well, I feel like since we're close enough to one, you might as well go see it if you're going to see the movie at all.
CONNOR GREENWALL: For some moviegoers, like Swede Rondan, it is worth the hassle to see the film in this exact format. He was lucky enough to get tickets for more than one showing, but others, not so much.
SWEDE RONDAN: Today, some of my coworkers were trying to get tickets because I was talking about it, I was so hyped about it. And so we were all looking, and we looked I think three weeks into August, and no tickets.
CONNOR GREENWALL: His coworkers are not alone. Shows in the 70 mm IMAX format are sold out globally, and well into September for some theaters.
Rondan says he's a big fan of Nolan's work and the mythology the film is based on. But for other moviegoers:
DOMINIC SOBIESKI: Dude, I have no idea what I'm getting into. I haven't even seen the trailer.
CONNOR GREENWALL: Dominic Sobieski says he's not here for the story, but for the experience of IMAX.
DOMINIC SOBIESKI: I'm seeing everywhere online that we've got to watch this movie the way it was meant to be watched.
CONNOR GREENWALL: The screen is six stories tall. If you were to see this film at a different theater in Arizona, the edges of the frame would be cut off.
DOMINIC SOBIESKI: The reason that this is sold out tonight at 1:30 a.m., um, people know that there's a difference, um, they know that they're missing out if they're not seeing it this way.
CONNOR GREENWALL: My colleague KJZZ's Jill Ryan caught up with the folks at Harkins to learn how they prepared to meet demand.
JILL RYAN: Tickets for the film went on sale a full year before its release, and the Arizona Mills theater has added almost round-the-clock IMAX showings. Spokesperson Jessica Reeves says it's not just locals coming in each day.
JESSICA REEVES: They're coming from all over the country. We have people flying in just to see it on the biggest screens at Harkins.
JILL RYAN: To date, "The Odyssey" in IMAX has made $140 million worldwide, and up to $650 million in all formats.
BILL GOODYKOONTZ: It's going to keep going up. This movie, I would guess this movie will make a billion dollars.
JILL RYAN: That's media critic Bill Goodykoontz from The Arizona Republic. He is a big fan of the movie, especially in IMAX 70 mm, and he says it's nice to see people come together for this experience.
BILL GOODYKOONTZ: Media has become so fragmented that there, you know, Thursday night TV used to be a big thing, and on Friday, everybody would talk about, "Oh, I can't believe what they did on Seinfeld last night," you know, or whatever, right? "Can you believe what happened on Friends last night?" People don't experience media in that way anymore.
JILL RYAN: And Goodykoontz says if you aren't able to see "The Odyssey" in IMAX 70 mm:
BILL GOODYKOONTZ: The time the director Christopher Nolan intended for people to see the movie, but I'll tell you this, I saw it two days later in a regular theater, and it's still great.

At least six people have died from heatstroke in the Mexican state of Sonora this year. As the climate warms globally, that state's capital is using a relatively simple solution to help resolve its urban heat problem: trees. From the Fronteras Desk in Hermosillo, Nina Kravinsky reports on efforts to reforest a desert capital.
NINA KRAVINSKY: On a still-hot summer evening, a group of volunteers is digging holes at a Hermosillo cemetery.
JIMENA VELÁZQUEZ: There's a lot of stigma. Some people are afraid to come to the cemeteries, says one volunteer, Jimena Velázquez.
NINA KRAVINSKY: But Velázquez sees these sprawling, quiet acres of white stone mausoleums and crosses as a refuge from the traffic and hubbub of Hermosillo. She's part of an organization called Caminantes del Desierto, whose mission is to reforest the city to provide some relief from the scorching heat. Sergio Müller is a conservationist and leader of that group.
SERGIO MÜLLER: Planting trees is the most simple way to mitigate urban heat, Müller says, to change the city's infrastructure. Its roadways and buildings is much more expensive, and those investments degrade over time, whereas a tree gains value as it grows.
NINA KRAVINSKY: The group has planted more than a thousand trees since 2019, including hundreds here at the cemetery. There's evidence that their strategy is working, Müller says.
SERGIO MÜLLER: Heat maps for this area used to show red and orange, but since they've started reforesting here, those same maps show orange and yellow now, says Müller.
NINA KRAVINSKY: It's easy to make an argument that Hermosillo needs shade. Temperatures reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit for much of the summer. Vast swaths of heat-absorbing surfaces like asphalt and concrete have continued to fan out as the growing city's roadways and relatively low buildings have expanded into the desert, exacerbating the urban heat island effect, experts say.
But it's not just that trees provide shade, says research professor Luis Alan Navarro with El Colegio de Sonora. They also release water vapor into the air, which cools the environment.
LUIS ALAN NAVARRO: Having vegetation nearby, or even just grass rather than synthetic turf, can feel like a cool towel on a hot day, Navarro says.
NINA KRAVINSKY: Public officials have caught on. The state of Sonora recently dedicated a portion of land it owns in the city to urban forestry. The city of Hermosillo says it's planted more than 113,000 trees since 2021.
Navarro warns it's not enough to just plant trees, especially in their infancy. The city's new saplings need caring, including well-functioning irrigation systems. And it's especially important that the trees be native to this environment and more likely to withstand the harsh desert ecosystem, Navarro says.
Over the past two decades, Navarro has seen native plants have a renaissance in Hermosillo.
LUIS ALAN NAVARRO: No one wanted native trees. They were considered weeds, Navarro says.
NINA KRAVINSKY: Trees like mesquites and palo verdes were once cast aside for tropical species, which require significantly more water. But as years of drought have put strain on the city's water resources, public officials and the community have started to embrace plants better adapted to the desert.
Back at the cemetery, volunteers use pickaxes to scrape shallow trenches for the thin black tubes that will bring water to each of the 10 new native palo colorado saplings they're planting here today, part of an irrigation system that waters the hundreds of trees Caminantes del Desierto has planted here in the cemetery over the years.
SERGIO MÜLLER: Part of the goal is for people to value native plants, like these palo colorados, Müller says.
NINA KRAVINSKY: For now, the neat, wooden-staked saplings are shorter than most of the grave markers that have become their new neighbors. Volunteer Jimena Velázquez carefully lowers one of the saplings into the ground.
JIMENA VELÁZQUEZ: It's gratifying, she says, as the sun begins to set and the heat of the day starts to dissipate, to end the day feeling like you've helped.

TIARA VIAN: In energy news:
Arizona's two largest utilities, APS and SRP, say they saw record-breaking demands for energy late last week. As Greg Hahne reports, the utilities inched closer to the capacity they initially planned for this summer.
GREG HAHNE: Both utilities delivered over 9,000 megawatts last Friday as temperatures hit 117 degrees. That's about 90% of the planned power capacity they reported to the state's utility regulator in April.
The jump in demand was between 400 and 500 megawatts from last year's record. That's enough to power between 65 and 100,000 homes.
Although the utilities neared planned capacity, they are able to tap into the regional grid and pull power from other states like California to prevent outages. With the growing demand, APS says it is adding to its power reserves. It's possible the energy records could be broken again this year depending on weather.

A new poll suggests people living in the Colorado River Basin overwhelmingly want their governments to do more to secure water for the future. As Alex Hager reports, that includes more than 90% of Arizona respondents.
ALEX HAGER: In Arizona and the six other states that use the river's water, roughly 90% of voters polled said they were worried about drought impacts, like increased wildfire risk, threats to clean drinking supplies, increased insurance costs, and smaller food supplies.
In the poll conducted by Morning Consult and the Walton Family Foundation, a similar number of people said the state and federal government should make addressing water security a top priority. They also supported water conservation and reuse in cities and protecting wildlife habitat. Roughly nine in 10 people also said they supported making farms more water efficient and helping farmers and ranchers adapt to hotter and drier conditions.

TIARA VIAN: In health news:
An extreme heat warning remains in effect through Monday. Highs are expected to be above 110, and the National Weather Service warns those temperatures pose health risks to most people. As Katherine Davis-Young reports, cooling centers across the Valley are seeing high demand.
KATHERINE DAVIS-YOUNG: At the First United Church of Christ in downtown Phoenix, Respite Center staff members say lately there have been lines at the door before they even open in the mornings. Jonathan Nelson is one of the regulars.
JONATHAN NELSON: I come in every day, cause the heat is really, really bad. I've been in the hospital because of the heat, I've been in kidney failure because of the heat.
KATHERINE DAVIS-YOUNG: He's been homeless in Phoenix for 15 years, but he says this has been his hardest summer yet. Even though rain has brought temperatures down a little, it's pushed humidity up, and he says that's worse. If not for this site, he says he couldn't survive.
That crosses Irene Rushdan's mind, too. She's with the Arizona Faith Network, which manages this heat relief site and a dozen others across the Valley.
IRENE RUSHDAN: So that's one of the things that really worries me when I see these temperatures go way up 117, is I'm thinking about, "Oh my god, are we going to lose anyone?"
KATHERINE DAVIS-YOUNG: 40 heat-related deaths have been confirmed so far this year in Maricopa County, with 388 more under investigation. Visitors and staff members here say this summer's heat remains an urgent threat, especially to unhoused people.

In politics news:
A Maricopa County judge has removed a so-called "poison pill" measure from the general election ballot that critics called a veiled attempt to undermine a competing school voucher reform initiative. From the politics desk, Wayne Schutsky reports.
WAYNE SCHUTSKY: The Republican lawmakers who sent HCR 2048 to the ballot said it would protect military families who receive school voucher dollars by stopping the state from passing new laws to revoke those funds. But it also includes language that would fully void any future law that violates those protections, a clause critics say was designed to invalidate a separate school voucher reform initiative.
Judge Joseph Kramer found the Republican proposal violated a rule requiring ballot measures to stick to a single subject because the first part could accomplish the goal of protecting vouchers for military families without including the poison pill. Republican lawmakers plan to appeal the ruling.

TIARA VIAN: In education news:
Chronic absenteeism in the Tucson Unified School District has reached 44%, the highest since 2021. As Bridget Dowd reports, the superintendent says they have a plan to address it.
BRIDGET DOWD: Chronic absence is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year. In Arizona, that's about 18 days of class. With the new school year about a week away, TUSD is launching a community liaison program. Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo says the pilot program will take a personalized case-management approach to absences.
GABRIEL TRUJILLO: Where we are interacting with our parents personally, as opposed to letters and phone calls, doing home visits, going into the home, seeing what the circumstances are that are preventing parents from getting their kids to school.
BRIDGET DOWD: Trujillo says 61% of absences in grades first through eighth are excused by parents.

Northern Arizona University is researching how a tiny cactus responds to fire. Here's co-host Mark Brodie.
MARK BRODIE: Clare Aslan is an NAU professor and a conservation biologist. She's been monitoring the Paradis Plains cactus in areas burned by the Dragon Bravo and White Sage fires last year. She says she gets that it may seem like scientists are paying a lot of attention to an admittedly very small cactus. But Aslan says trying to understand how, when, and where systems recover from fire is important for managing a landscape. That's especially true, she says, as fires become bigger and more intense.
Aslan joins me to talk more about this, and Clare, could you please describe what this cactus looks like for those of us maybe who have seen it, but aren't quite sure?
CLARE ASLAN: Sure, sure. Um, so this cactus, um, the Paradis Plains cactus, is extremely small. Uh, it actually can fit in the palm of your hand quite easily. Um, it's also very low to the ground. So when you are standing above it looking down, it often looks like it's barely poking up above the surface. It's almost flush with the ground itself.
Um, it's kind of a, uh, a little bit of an olive green color with some fairly soft spines that won't, it won't poke you like a prickly pear might do. And it contains these, these flowers in April and May, which are very beautiful. They range from kind of white to a peach color, that are almost as big as the entire surface of the plant. So, oftentimes the flower is what you see first.
MARK BRODIE: Okay. And am I right that this particular type of cactus has some kind of unusual seasonal behavior, irrespective of how it interacts with fire?
CLARE ASLAN: Yes, um, so this particular cactus and its close relatives have what's called contractile roots. And this means that when the cactus feels stressed, and this may be because it's very dry, or possibly because it's very cold, those roots can actually contract and pull the entire plant down kind of into the ground. And they live in a very, uh, an area with very sort of loose sediment, and so that sediment can sort of sift over top of the plant, which means that the plant can actually go underground.
So, and then when things improve, when it gets warmer, or when it gets a little bit wet, those roots sort of re-inflate and push that plant back up, and they pop back up! And so you can go to a site and not be able to find them, and go a month later and there they are.
MARK BRODIE: So does that make it any less surprising to you that these cacti may be act a little bit differently when they come into contact with fire than other species?
CLARE ASLAN: I think it does indicate that these cacti are very responsive to their environment, and to relatively short-term changes in the environment, and also that a lot of what is going on with regard to these cacti is happening underground.
And I should say that we know from old herbarium specimens, where people actually dug up whole plants, so this may have been 50 years ago, that a lot of the plant is below ground. So as I describe it to you as this super tiny plant that you can barely see, that's not the entire story. There's more of this cactus going on down there.
So when it comes to fire, I do think that that might be part of the reason that we've seen some resilience in these individual plants, is that they may have that kind of built-in protection that perhaps is intended for temperature, or for moisture, but it may come in handy when it comes to a fire event as well.
MARK BRODIE: Interesting. Okay, so tell me what exactly it is that you're going to be looking at and looking for during this project up in the area where there were some pretty significant fires over the last year or so.
CLARE ASLAN: Yeah. So this cactus is known as a species of concern. Um, it's actually not a listed endangered species, but a number of very close relatives are. And because it's a species of concern, and actually to try to prevent it from becoming endangered, there's been long-term monitoring that's been going on. We've been tracking these cacti kind of year-to-year, checking out their flowering, looking at their pollinators, getting a sense of where the central populations are.
So then the fire comes along, um, and some of the most high-severity areas, particularly of the White Sage fire, but also um, some portions of the Dragon Bravo fire, overlapped directly with where these cacti occur. So I went out there a few weeks after the fire was finally declared fully over last October, and remarkably found that almost the only green thing you could see in some of these sites were these super tiny cacti.
So that really led us to realize, wow, these, these plants, at least some of them, have survived in the immediate aftermath of the fire. We have all this monitoring data, let's try to see if we can use that data to compare how the plants are doing now with how they were doing in the past and get a sense of how well they're going to do going forward.
So over these next couple of years, our goal is to monitor individual plants to determine if their survival lasts, basically can they make it a whole year after the fire, particularly in cases where the plant was visibly damaged? And then, do they still reproduce? Are they able to carry out their functions as this community starts to recover from this event?
MARK BRODIE: Oh, that's interesting. So is there a chance, maybe, that the individual plant survived, but like, it won't be able to reproduce? That it might be the last one of that, of that particular kind?
CLARE ASLAN: Right, that's kind of the, the question, um, mainly because some of these plants do show some damage, so there's a little spot of green, which is remarkable, but when you get close, there's kind of burned cactus spines surrounding, sort of in the, in the soil surrounding that, so we know that there was some damage. Also, again, because they are mostly underground, and we don't want to risk disturbing them further, we don't really know whether any form of soil heating might have affected the, the broader cactus structure underground.
So, this year we were able to observe flowers, which was really wonderful. They, they did flower. But I haven't observed very many fruits, and a cactus has to invest a lot of moisture to create a fruit, and that leads us to wonder if perhaps these plants are still so stressed out, they may be still recovering from this damage, or still feeling that damage, so they haven't yet been able to make that investment in fruits.
MARK BRODIE: Do you have a sense of why it is that some of the cacti maybe had some damage and, and some didn't? Like, is it just a matter of where the fire happened to burn, or is there maybe reason to think that some of the cacti were in the fire, but didn't actually get damaged?
CLARE ASLAN: Yeah, um, that's a great question. I do think I'm seeing that. Uh, there's one particular area where we have an unusually high density of the plants, and that area does happen to coincide with some of the higher severity portions of the, of the fire. So the trees that are um, above these cacti, so kind of the canopy, a lot of those trees were killed by the fire.
And in that same area, I do see some individual cacti that are clearly damaged, as I mentioned, there's some burned spines, but there's still some green portions. There's a few that are totally dead and clearly burned, but then there's quite a few that look great! They kind of look like nothing happened.
And so, the question I kind of have in my head, and I may never know the answer, is: Is that because those particular ones happened to be underground at the moment that the fire burned, um, or was there some other reason that they escaped? But we do really see the entire range of conditions.
MARK BRODIE: Huh. Do you think it's possible, and maybe it's not possible to know this yet, but do you think that it will be possible to take what you learn from this particular species of cactus and extrapolate it out to look at how other species of cactus, or even other species of plants, respond to fire?
CLARE ASLAN: We do know that these systems in this region are fire-adapted. So all the plants, all the plant species, will have experienced fire to some degree, and plants respond to fire in different ways. Some of them may not survive the fire themselves, but they are able to reproduce, um, and their offspring will emerge quickly after fire. Others can actually survive the fire itself. It's a wide range.
I think the thing that makes this particular plant so unique, um, is this funny behavior it has, of kind of disappearing and reappearing. Its, its rarity across the landscape, and its extremely tiny size. It's such a remarkable sort of distinction that this plant has compared to others, that in terms of being the only green thing that we saw after the fire, um, it does make me wonder if it's giving us some insight into some new forms of adaptation to a fire that we hadn't necessarily described before.
MARK BRODIE: All right. Clare, thanks so much for the conversation, I really appreciate it.
