Pima County Attorney Laura Conover has called for a better review of the death penalty, after top state officials announced last week they were ready to resume executions.
The head of the state Corrections Department told Gov. Katie Hobbs the agency has worked out problems with lethal injection.
Conover says life in prison is an alternative that solves issues that come with sentencing someone to death.
"Life in prison with no chance for parole. That is, in fact, a different kind of death sentence and one in which I have heard time and again victims' families say, 'That's right,'" she said.
Conover says there are inequalities in the death penalty, including the race of inmates on death row and where crimes are committed. Some counties often don’t seek the death penalty due to the associated costs.
