The U.S. Consulate in Hermosillo says the state of Sonora, Mexico, could become a destination for the space industry.
At an event called “Opportunities in the Space Industry,” Acting Consul General Tim Stater gave a presentation to highlight advantages Sonora has for future development from the space sector.
In a video of the event from the news outlet El Imparcial, Stater said Sonora’s geography lends itself to the construction of a launch pad for rockets and satellites.
He said the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico would make it easier to recover spacecraft when they fall back to Earth. In turn, rocket launches could drive tourism to Sonora’s beaches.
Nearby Yuma is also vying to become a space hub. It’s in the running for funding to build a spaceport.
