The Arizona Coyotes play their last game of the season on April 17, 2024.

The new head of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors announced Monday that he will prioritize bringing a professional hockey team back to the Valley.

Republican Thomas Galvin is now the unanimously elected chair of the board and said he’s met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who supports his plan.

“I’m forming an advisory committee of visionary leaders dedicated to bringing NHL hockey back to the Valley,” Galvin said.

Galvin says the two big questions which need to be answered are who would be the team’s owner and where would the building be. He also clarified that he hasn’t met with any potential owners yet.

As for why the county is taking this issue upon itself, he says he believes there has been a “vacuum of leadership” and believes this new committee can come to a solution.

“Losing the NHL Coyotes was a low point, and I cringed when local politicians took glee in the demise of our hockey team,” he said.

As for who will sit on this committee, Galvin said the names will be released shortly, but it will be a coalition of political and business leaders.
