Bill to ban foreign entities 'hostile to the U.S.' from buying AZ land without legislator approval

Moving through the Arizona Legislature on a party-line vote, Republican lawmakers look to make it illegal for foreign entities "hostile to the United States'' to buy land in the state without legislator approval.

But those opposed, like Democratic Sen. Priya Sundareshan, pointed out that the legislation doesn’t define who is considered "hostile'' and how such a decision would be made — other than what a majority of lawmakers decide.

"Without that kind of clarity this kind of a bill, this kind of a restriction is going to put in place a scenario where people may be racially profiled," Sundareshan said.

The bill’s sponsor Mark Finchem says the measure (SB 1066) is modeled after legislation passed in Arkansas.
