The state House of Representatives passed a bill this week that would allow schools to authorize trained teachers and school staff to carry guns on campus.

The bill would also shield those employees from civil or criminal liability for actions they take during an active crisis event.

The measure specifies that in order to carry a gun on campus, employees would have to pass a certification program.

That would include training on use of force, firearms and emergency medical care. Employees would also go through a crisis management course focusing on de-escalation.

Opponents say armed school employees would only cause confusion in a crisis, and that nothing in the bill states where weapons would be stored.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
