A state representative wants to keep lawmakers from claiming a form of immunity for breaking traffic laws during the Legislative session.

Most recently, two lawmakers claimed legislative immunity when ticketed for speeding, including Sen. Mark Finchem and former Sen. Justine Wadsack, who was driving 71 miles per hour in a 35 zone.

Rep. Quang Nguyen introduced the measure to alter the state constitution’s immunity provision.

"This is about the institution that I love so much, that I care about. And I don't want to draw any more negative attention to the House of Representatives or the Legislature," Nguyen said.

Legislative immunity does not cover arrests for treason and felonies. If the bill passes the Legislature, it will go to voters next year.
