An Arizona Democratic lawmaker is proposing that the Legislature make the word “Howdy” the official state greeting.
Rep. Kevin Volk suggests it also could be a part of a mix of greetings.
"There's an argument for 'Hola' (Spanish), there's an argument for 'Ya'at'eeh' (Navajo). And certainly if there were strong feelings about that then I'd be happy to take those into account," Volk said.
There is bipartisan support for what Volk says is a fun way to highlight Arizona’s cowboy culture and Hollywood Western roots.
Only Hawaii has an official state greeting, that being "Aloha.'' Missouri tried a decade ago to make the "High five'' their official greeting, but failed.
