A long-awaited rule to limit off-road vehicle use in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was set to go into effect in early February. Now, it’s on hold until next month.

The rule would reduce ORV traffic in hotspots like Lone Rock Beach, where a 2021 lawsuit argued unchecked use was damaging the landscape.

A settlement last year led to the stricter regulations, but officials with the National Park Service now say they need more time to review an order from the Trump administration last month, which directed government agencies to freeze the “go” dates of pending regulations.

Starting March 21, the new rule will still limit driving access in high-traffic spots like Lone Rock Beach and designated shoreline access areas.
