Legislative Republicans look to make more tax cuts 4 years after making the largest in state history

Republicans in the Arizona Legislature are looking to enact more tax cuts just four years after they imposed the largest cut in state history.

Those cuts turned a budget surplus into a nearly billion-dollar deficit.

The state is finally facing a surplus after having to cut more than a billion dollars in spending to balance the current year’s budget.

While Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs says she would be willing to look at more tax relief measures, she is opposed to a measure passed by the state Senate last week.

That bill would cut income tax every time the state brings in more money than is needed for ongoing programs. Those cuts would be essentially locked in because it only takes a simple majority to pass cuts, but increases in taxes need a two-thirds vote.

However a companion proposal would go to voters if Hobbs vetoes the bill.
