A bill that would ban public officials or employees from displaying certain flags on public property is making its way through the Legislature.

The bill’s sponsor is Republican Rep. Nick Kupper of Surprise. He says flags that are officially flown must be politically neutral.

"This bill is something that should, if passed, lower some of the extreme temperatures on either side of our aisle," Kupper said.

The definition of a “neutral” flag remains unclear. But Kupper says examples of non-neutral flags include the Pride flag, Confederate flag and Nazi flag.

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs has flown the Pride flag from the executive tower.

Opponents say flag bans waste legislative time and that lawmakers should be concentrating on topics such as child care costs and housing.
