AZ House nears final vote on bill adding school board candidate's political party on ballots

A bill moving through the Arizona House would add the political affiliation of school board candidates to the ballot.

School board elections have not traditionally been partisan. But political groups will often send voters brochures telling them who they should vote for.

The bill passed through the Senate and is now moving through the House, along party lines. Republican Sen. John Kavanagh is for the change.

“If you're a Republican, you're going to tend to be conservative and if you're a Democrat you're going to tend to be liberal. Now more than ever. Because, quite frankly, the parties have purged the moderates from both of them. So, searching for who to vote for, party affiliation is an extremely valuable identifier," Kavanagh said.

Opponents say it would needlessly inject politics into school issues. Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed similar legislation last year.
