One of Arizona’s most competitive legislative districts has a newly appointed state senator.

Legislative District 9 encompasses part of Mesa. It was represented by Democrat Eva Burch, who announced a few weeks ago that she had decided to resign due to the low pay and her inability to accomplish her goals as a Democrat in the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Burch was the first Democrat to resign this year, although several Democratic lawmakers resigned the session prior.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors selected former Senate research staffer Kiana Sears to be the area’s new senator out of three candidates selected by local Democratic leaders.

Sears is also a Democrat and served as a Mesa Public Schools board member for eight years.

"We were honored to consider three tremendous candidates for the Arizona LD-9 Senate appointment — each uniquely qualified and deeply committed to public service," Supervisor Mark Stewart said in a statement.

"After thoughtful deliberation, the Board selected Kiana Sears because of her exceptional leadership, deep understanding of key issues like water, housing, and education, and a lifelong record of community service. We thank her for stepping up to serve and wish her great success on behalf of our county and state."

Sears will serve out the remainder of Burch’s term, which ends in 2026.
