Former state lawmaker Travis Grantham is the first big-name Republican to throw his hat in the ring to run for Andy Biggs’ congressional seat.

Grantham is a Republican who has served the East Valley in the state Legislature for years.

Biggs is running for governor — leaving a desirable spot open in the heavily Republican Congressional District 5.

Grantham formally announced his campaign on Tuesday.

He said he thinks he’ll have the support of the GOP base, including the far-right. He said even though he wasn’t a member of the Legislature’s far-right Freedom Caucus, he worked alongside those members.

At one point, Grantham noted he also ran on a slate with Sen. Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek) the head of the Freedom Caucus.

In Congress, Grantham said he’ll uphold conservative principles.

“I want to help Donald Trump forward his agenda. I want to make sure that DOGE is successful in shrinking the size and cost of government. I want to make sure that we’re keeping government out of people’s private lives, and I want to see Americans exercise and have as many freedoms as they can be afforded,” Grantham said.
