After President Donald Trump’s tariffs against dozens of countries, as well as a 10% baseline tax on all imports, Arizona lawmakers are debating if the executive action will benefit state residents.

Republican Rep. John Gillette of Kingman says the tariffs are already producing results, using the example of Hyundai Steel, along with Hyundai Motor Group, opening a factory in Louisiana.

"The very first Congress passed the very first bill, and it was a tariff. Tariff and excise tax is how we are supposed to generate money from trade," Gillette said.

Democrat Rep. Sarah Liguori of Phoenix says recent tariffs will have a price tag of $30 trillion for the country. She also says it calls for a change in perspective toward the current administration and an immediate discussion from both political parties on how it will affect the average Arizona consumer.

"Let’s discuss this, let's come together in a meaningful bipartisan way. Arizonans and the entire country are going to suffer because of this, and we need to come forward with solutions," Liguori said.

Liguori also says she doesn’t believe the move is a sound economic or fiscal policy.
