Governor Katie Hobbs has vetoed Senate Bill 1164, also called the Arizona ICE Act.
The Republican-backed legislation would have prevented state agencies and local governments from adopting policies banning cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
It would also require sheriffs and the state prison system to comply with detainer requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In her veto letter, Hobbs wrote “I will continue to work with the federal government on true border security, but we should not force state and local officials to take marching orders from Washington D.C.”
The bill was sponsored by Republican Senate President Warren Petersen. It was one in a slew of proposals intended to support the Trump administration's effort to carry out mass deportations.
