New law expands AZ missing persons alert system to include those with cognitive disabilities

A new law aims to better protect vulnerable people who go missing in Arizona. That means the state's alert system is getting an overhaul.

The new law renames Arizona’s Silver Alert system and expands who it’s intended to help. Now called the Seek and Find Alert System, it covers all individuals with cognitive disabilities, regardless of age.

David Carey, chair of the Arizona Disability Advocacy Coalition, hopes this bill will streamline the process especially after his own father, who had memory loss, went missing.

“This bill sends a strong message: That every life matters and every second counts," he said.

The new law requires law enforcement to act immediately and bars delays due to red tape or a person’s history of going missing. Agencies across the state will also get specialized training to improve response efforts.
