Arizona’s junior U.S. senator is pushing back on proposed cuts to Medicaid, in part with a new bill to have the program help pay for one year of health coverage for new mothers.
Arizona currently opts to fund the practice with money from a law passed under former President Joe Biden.
But Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego said if cuts being proposed by congressional Republicans are passed, rural health care facilities in Arizona will close.
“Imagine what that person in Willcox is gonna have to do. Or some person in Douglas is gonna have to do now to make sure their family has safe delivery and a safe postpartum,” Gallego said
Gallego and his wife announced the birth of a son last week.
