SCOTUS ruling could allow Arizona to enforce law blocking Planned Parenthood funding

A Thursday ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court could allow Arizona to finally enforce a 2012 law that denies state funds from going to Planned Parenthood.

Enforcement of the law — which prohibits the family planning clinic from receiving Medicaid funds because it provides abortion services — was blocked by federal courts over a decade ago.

Federal law already blocks the use of Medicaid funding from going directly toward elective abortions — but does not prohibit an organization like Planned Parenthood from receiving funding for other services.

Republican Rep. Justin Olson crafted the original measure.

"The concern is that there is an indirect subsidy with tax dollars for the elective abortions they're providing. And that's what this would prohibit from occurring," he said.

Olson said he plans to reach out to county attorneys to file legal papers in an attempt to allow the state law to be enforced.
