A candidate has emerged in the upcoming Mesa special recall election against council member Julie Spilsbury.

The new challenger is Mesa resident Dorean Taylor. She is the only candidate to step up so far and has until Sept. 5 to gather enough signatures to get her name on the ballot.

Taylor moved to Arizona in 2008 and runs a home remodeling business with her husband.

She did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The recall effort against Spilsbury started with Mesa resident JoAnne Robbins.

Robbins opposes Spilsbury’s votes to convert a hotel into homeless housing, and raise council salaries and utility rates. She also accused Spilsbury of not promoting conservative values as a Republican, although the council is nonpartisan.

The recall election for District 2 will be Nov. 4.
