Arizona Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego want to let Canadian citizens extend their winter stays in Arizona.

The Democratic senators have reintroduced the Canadian Snowbirds Act, a bill that would add nearly two months to the length of time our neighbors to the north could stay in the U.S. each year — from 182 days to 240.

Canadians already contribute nearly $2 billion annually to Arizona’s economies during their visits — or extended stays — and Kelly and Gallego argue extending the amount of time they spend in Arizona would be a boon for the state’s tourism and real estate industries.

The bill would prohibit Canadians from accessing public assistance or employment while in the U.S, and Canadian retirees would be required to own or lease property in Arizona during their stay.
