Monday is the first official day on the job for Phoenix police Chief Matt Giordano. He’s the department’s first permanent chief in almost three years.

Giordano was chosen as Phoenix police chief after the city did two national searches.

He leads a department with an officer shortage going back more than a decade. And Phoenix police are still reforming after civil rights violations were exposed in a years-long investigation.

In a prepared statement, Giordano said he’s back in the department where he built relationships and learned leadership.

“It’s personal. I step into this new role with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. My commitment is to lead with integrity, humility and transparency,” Giordano said.

Giordano retired as a Phoenix police commander, then worked for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. He most recently led the state board that oversees police officers.

The chief who once led community relations also said strong bonds between the public and police don’t happen quickly.

“They’re built through daily actions, honest conversations and a shared vision for safety, respect and accountability,” Giordano said.
