A local Ukrainian immigrant said she was disappointed, but not surprised, that President Donald Trump’s summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin did not lead to a ceasefire in her home country.

Irene Amrine, who cofounded a volunteer initiative in Phoenix advocating for and supporting Ukraine, said she was discouraged by the lack of progress.

“Even now during these so-called peace negotiations, Russia is showing us that they’re not ready for the ceasefire. Ukraine is under bombs almost daily," she said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he’s agreed to meet with Trump in Washington on Monday to discuss how to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
