In a legal opinion, Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes says voters whose driver's licenses predate proof of citizenship requirements cannot be kicked off voter rolls.
Arizona didn’t require proof of citizenship to get a license until 1996. Motor Vehicle Division notified officials last year that its system incorrectly said people submitted proof when they never did because their license predated that requirement.
A precise number for how many people isn’t clear.
The state’s highest court let them vote in last year’s election, but did not address the question going forward.
In the Monday opinion, Mayes said county recorders don’t have the power to unilaterally cancel the voter registration of the people involved. The chair of the Arizona Republican Party Gina Swoboda said she agrees with Mayes’ conclusion.
