Representatives from Arizona’s largest labor unions are calling on lawmakers to stand up for working people. This comes as the Trump administration ends its collective bargaining agreements with federal employee unions.
Just ahead of Labor Day, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to strip those bargaining abilities from workers at the National Weather Service, NASA and other federal agencies, claiming the move protects national security.
Now, people representing more than 200,000 Arizona union members want elected officials to fight back.
Jim McLaughlin is president of UFCW Local 99, the state’s largest private sector union.
“Leaders in Washington have launched what feels like an all-out assault on our members and working people and the unions that represent them," McLaughlin said.
He says unions provide workers with better wages, stronger benefits and safer working conditions.
“We will never back down from defending the dignity and rights of working people because when workers fight, we win," McLaughlin said.
