At a closed-door meeting on Wednesday, Arizona state lawmakers met with child safety advocates to find solutions to the issues afflicting the Department of Child Safety. The agency has come under fire following the deaths of three children known to caseworkers.
Gov. Katie Hobbs was in attendance and spoke afterwards.
"I’ve said this many times, we’re not going to solve this with knee-jerk reactions, we have to do a deep dive and really look at the points where the system didn’t work the way it should work."
Hobbs said changes are needed, whether administratively or if it means going to the Legislature to make those changes.
Republican Sen. Carine Werner (Scottsdale) was also at the meeting. “I do feel confident that we are going to be able to make positive changes,” she said.
The joint legislative oversight committee on DCS is expected to hold a public meeting on the issues in the future.
